SERVICES
SCREENING
If you are unsure whether your child needs an evaluation or therapy services, Johnson County Speech Language Therapy offers developmental screenings. These brief, informal assessments help determine if your child is meeting age-based communication milestones or may benefit from a more in-depth evaluation.
Screenings include observation of your child, a short parent interview, and a quick assessment of developmental speech and language skills.
After the screening, we will discuss findings and determine appropriate next steps for your child.
We conduct comprehensive evaluations using a combination of parent interviews, standardized testing, and informal assessment tools to identify your child’s strengths and areas for growth.
Evaluation sessions typically take 30 minutes to 1-2 hours, depending on the type and extent of testing required. Families will receive a detailed report summarizing testing results, interpretation of findings, and recommendations.
If therapy is recommended, we will work together to develop a personalized intervention play with clear, measurable goals.
EVALUATIONS
INDIVIDUALIZED THERAPY
Therapy sessions are personalized to meet your child’s specific communication needs. We use a variety of evidence-based approaches including:
Play-based therapy to engage younger children
Clinician-directed activities for focused skill-building
Literacy-based therapy to promote language development in multiple areas
Session length and frequency are individualized based on your child’s needs and the recommended intensity of the treatment. Areas of treatment may include:
Articulation and Phonological development - improving the clarity of speech sounds for easier understanding
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) - improving motor planning for clearer, more consistent speech
Early language development - supporting the development of expressive language through the use of gestures, signs, and words
Receptive language - improving the ability to follow directions and understand language
Expressive language - helping children express themselves in more complex and accurate ways
Speech fluency - decreasing the frequency of stuttering and teaching strategies to manage fluency
Social/pragmatic communication - increase attention and listening skills such as joint attention and focus, develop play, and encourage initiation of interactions
Therapy is most often provided in the home setting, but may also occur in your child’s daycare, preschool, or via teletherapy. We also offer services to supplement existing support, including children with current IFSPs or IEPs.
CONSULTATION
We offer a variety of consultations to support parents and professionals:
Parent Consultations: Learn how to support your child’s communication during everyday routines. We’ll demonstrate how to use your child’s existing toys, books, and daily activities as tools for speech and language development.
Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) Consultations: For families navigation early intervention (Birth-3 years) or school-age services, we provide guidance in understanding IFSP and IEP documents, reviewing evaluation reports, and offering support during meetings.
Professional Consultations: For schools or districts seeking private evaluations, we offer collaboration and documentation support as needed.
