Supporting every step of

your child’s communication

Screenings

If you’re unsure whether your child needs an evaluation or therapy, Johnson County Speech Language Therapy offers developmental screenings.

These brief, informal assessments help determine if your child is meeting age-based communication milestones or may benefit from a more in-depth evaluation.

Screenings include observation of your child, a short parent interview, and a quick assessment of speech and language skills.

After the screening, we will discuss findings and recommend next steps.

We conduct comprehensive evaluations to better understand your child’s communication strengths and areas for growth. Evaluations include a combination of parent input, standardized testing, and informal assessment tools.

Evaluation sessions typically range from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the type and extent of testing needed.

Families receive a detailed report that includes results, interpretations of findings, and individualized recommendations.

If therapy is recommended, we will work together to develop a personalized plan with clear, measurable goals.

Evaluations

Individualized Therapy

Therapy sessions are tailored to meet your child’s unique communication needs using a variety of evidence-based approaches.

Sessions may include:

  • Play-based therapy to engage younger children

  • Clinician-directed activities for focused skill-building

  • Literacy-based activities to support language development

Session length and frequency are individualized based on your child’s needs and the recommended level of support.

Areas of focus may include:

  • Speech sound production (articulation and phonology) to improve clarity

  • Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) to support motor planning

  • Expressive language to help your child communicate more clearly

  • Receptive language to support understanding and following directions

  • Speech fluency to teach strategies to manage and decrease stuttering

  • Social communication to build interaction, attention, and play skills

Therapy most often takes place in your home but may also occur at your child’s preschool or daycare, or via teletherapy.
